Mario Bros

Sam's now up from his nap, and he seems to be doing a lot better. We've sort of reached a milestone - he can now have his head on a pillow and the head of the bed is now slightly elevated. This plus the nap have really improved his mood. He's practicing his taekwondo punches in bed!

I spoke with Tessa, his nurse, and it sounds like they'll take off his bandages tomorrow.

In other family news, I found out some terrible news about my friend Jason Bivin. Jason was in a bad car accident on 10/27. I hadn't heard from him since my birthday, but I had figured he was just really busy with all the financial market craziness that's been going on. Jason's feet, pelvis, and jaw were broken, and he ruptured his bladder. Unfortunately, his left foot took a turn for worse -- it actually started making him pretty sick, so they had to amputate it. Since that happened, it sounds like he's been recovering well.

Jason was essentially a professional hiker for a few years from 2004-2007, so this will be a tough loss. However, the amputation was below the knee, and they have amazing prosthetics for that injury. Given his passion for the outdoors, I doubt this will have any permanent affect on his hiking. In fact, I think he's going to embrace this challenge with great energy and zeal.

They're gradually bringing him out of heavy sedation, so I hope to communicate with him really soon. Jason has been a wonderful friend of mine over the past 12 years, and was best man at my wedding. Please say a prayer for him, as well as for his parents, Stan and Suzy Bivin who have been at his side throughout his recovery.
