Wed a.m. update

Sam's wheelchair finally arrived yesterday, so Sam was able to get out of bed and out of the spare room. Rob is planning to take him to the library or Mall of America to try for a change of pace.

Last night we ate pizza in Sam's room and Rob turned off the TV. Both Gabe and Sam protested. I suggested we could talk during dinner. After a couple of minutes, Sam said, "How many more minutes do we have to talk now?". I guess this means he's been using electronics too much recently!

We had a family meeting after dinner, where we each take turns talking about why we love our family, and anything else we want to talk about. Sam said that he misses his friends at school and was happy they cared about him and made cards for him.

Sam is still refusing to take much pain medicine, now including the Motrin. Last night, about 11:00 p.m., he was crying and finally agreed to take a small amount of hydrocodone + acetaminophen. It helped him sleep through the night.

Even with our cool weather, Sam's legs and toes are sweating a bit in the casts, and so itch as well. We brought in an oscillating floor fan to help. I'm grateful Sam is not in casts over the hot summer months.

The other night we read a book called The Three Trees, that was given as a gift to Sam by our Youth Director at Salem (thanks Lori!). Sam enjoyed the book so much he asked for some paper and started writing his own story about four trees!

Sam is trying to keep up on his homework - he enjoys math, so he and Rob have been working on those assignments. Writing sentences is still a challenge - maybe we can turn in his Four Trees story for credit? :)

We just heard that Sam's Aunt Gina will be able to work as Sam's PCA when she comes home from college in a couple of weeks. Sam will then have three PCAs helping at home! I'm grateful for our healthcare system in Minnesota!

Hi Rob & family--I just read all of your postings. Boy, have you been busy and have had a lot to go through. I was happy to read that everything went well and Sam's recovery is progressing well. I will pray that it continues to do so. From what I've read, you have a couple of GREAT boys! Keep up those family talks. Some day the boys will really appreciate them. Take care--Janelle Kletzin

Hi, I coordinate the Prayer Chain at All Saints Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove. Janette M. asked us to join her in praying for Sam's full recovery. We're happy to be with with you as your bones grow and your legs heal.
I'll check your blog occasionally to keep up with your progress. God bless you all!
