Night before Surgery

Sam's taking a shower right now -- he's having a real blast. He's pretty excited about the surgery. Aside from the usual parental apprehension, I think I'm pretty excited too. The 2008 surgery was an SDR - selective dorsal rhizotomy - in which the neurosurgeon was severing nerve rootlets as they left the base of the spinal column. It required a microscope and some sensitive electronic equipment. Once a nerve is cut, it's not capable of growing back, so in that respect, it's a more permanent kind of surgery.

Sam's operation tomorrow will be different in a lot of ways. The docs are going to basically rearrange his legs to give him more support, so that means tools and hardware stuff. No microscope needed. The bones and muscles will grow back and become stronger.

We're fortunate to have all these great docs and facilities right here in the Twin Cities...can't imagine what it would have been like if we didn't live here.
